Appendices APA

Do you think that your academic paper needs APA appendices? If you do, we understand the challenges that come with formatting appendices in APA style.

Many writers face challenges in understanding their purpose and proper placement. But worry not!

Our guide addresses these problems by offering clear explanations and practical solutions. Learn the ins and outs of APA appendices, from where to include them to easy formatting techniques.

Let’s get started!

What is an Appendix in APA Style?

In APA style, an appendix is an additional section at the end of a paper, used to present information that supplements the main content of the paper. It includes materials that are too extensive for the main text, such as figures or tables, or detailed descriptions of equipment used.

Mostly, appendices include content that is too confusing, distracting or inappropriate to be included in the main body of the paper.

The content of appendices should be easily presented in print format according to the official APA 7th. Edition guidelines.

The Ideal Placement for Appendix in APA Style Paper

If you include an appendix section in your paper, you should create a separate page for it at the end of the APA-style paper.

Here is the ideal placement for the appendices:

Let’s now move on to the next section of this guide, where we will explore how to format appendices in APA format.

How to Create Appendices in APA Format?

Follow these instructions to accurately format your APA appendices:

Labeling:

  • Assign each appendix a letter (e.g., Appendix A, Appendix B)
  • Use bold font for the appendix labels

Referring in Text:

  • Clearly mention each appendix in the text (e.g., “see Appendix A”)
  • Incorporate this reference at the end of sentences in parentheses

Numbering and Naming:

  • Use labeled appendix/appendices (Appendix A, Appendix B)
  • If you exceed 26 appendices, use double letters (e.g., AA, BB)

Titles and Pages:

  • At the top of the page, provide a clear title for each appendix in bold and in title case
  • Begin each appendix on a separate page, centered and bolded
  • Add page numbering to the top right of the appendix page

Paragraph Formatting:

  • Maintain double-spacing throughout
  • Apply standard (first line) indentation for paragraphs

Tables/Figures:

  • Treat tables and figures within appendices as in the main text
  • If applicable, incorporate the lettered appendix into the numbering (e.g., Table B3 is the third table in the appendix)

How to Reference an Appendix in APA?

Whenever you include appendices in your APA formatted paper, it is important to include them in your references. Just follow these straightforward tips to make sure your references are clear and match the APA format.

In-Text Reference

Use parentheses for APA in-text references, like (see Appendix A).
Example: “The survey results are detailed in the attached questionnaire (see Appendix B).”

External Source in Appendix

If the appendix includes information from an outside source:

  • Parenthetically cite the source within the text of the appendix.
  • Example: “The findings support previous research on this topic (Lawrence, 2019).”
  • Include the full reference in the main references section.
  • Example: Lawrence, J. (2019). Study on [Title]. Journal of Research, 14(3), 45-58.
