How to Cite a PowerPoint

PowerPoint presentations are a common source of information for academic papers or projects.

Whether you use your instructor’s slides or find a PowerPoint online, you need to cite the presentation properly to give credit to the original author and avoid plagiarism.

But how do you cite a PowerPoint presentation in different citation styles

In this blog post, we will show you how to cite a PowerPoint presentation in APA, MLA, and Chicago style, with examples and tips for each style.

So, without making you wait any longer, let's get right into it!

Citing PowerPoint Presentations in Different Citation Styles

The basic information you need to cite a PowerPoint presentation is the same for all citation styles:

  • Author or presenter name(s)
  • Presentation title (in italics)
  • Date of publication or presentation
  • Place of publication or presentation (if applicable)
  • URL (if accessed online)

However, the format and order of this information may vary depending on the citation style you use. Here are the general rules and examples for each style:

Cite a PowerPoint in APA Style

APA style is commonly used in the social and behavioral sciences. To cite a PowerPoint presentation in APA style, you need to use the following format for your reference list entry:

Format: Author Last Name, First Name Intials. (Year, Month Day). Presentation title [PowerPoint slides]. Conference Name, Location. URL

For APA in-text citations, you need to include the author's name(s) and the year of publication in parentheses after the relevant text.

Here is an example to help you have a better understanding:

Example:

Citation: Smith, J. (2023, February 15). The Sweet World of Chocolate [PowerPoint slides]. International Chocolate Conference, Cocoa City. https://www.exampleconferencewebsite.com/chocolatepresentation.

In-Text Citation: (Smith, 2023)

For Direct Quotes:

If you quote directly in APA style from the presentation in APA style, you also need to include the slide number instead of the page number.

Example:

Chocolate has a melting point just below the average human body temperature (Smith, 2023, Slide 11).

Cite a PowerPoint in MLA Style

To cite a PowerPoint presentation in MLA style, you need to use the following format for your works cited entry:

Format: Author’s Last Name, First Name. Presentation Title. Date of Publication, URL. PowerPoint Presentation.

For MLA in-text citations, you need to include the author’s last name and the slide number in parentheses after the relevant text.

Example:

Citation: Smith, John. "The Sweet World of Chocolate Delights." 15 Feb. 2023, www.exampleurl.com/chocolatepresentation. PowerPoint Presentation.

In-Text Citation: (Smith 7)

For Direct Quotes:

To add a quote from a presentation, the author’s name is mentioned in the text and the slide number is in parentheses.

Example:

Smith says ‘Chocolate was included in the military rations as it was believed to provide quick energy and sustenance’ (Slide 14).

In the case, you did not mention the author’s name in the direct quote, mention it in the parentheses.

Example:

Chocolate was included in the military rations as it was believed to provide quick energy and sustenance (Smith, Slide 14).

Cite a PowerPoint in Chicago Style

Chicago style is commonly used in the history and social sciences. To cite a PowerPoint presentation in Chicago style (Notes-Bibliography), you need to use the following formats:

Full Note: First Name Last Name, "Title of Presentation" (PowerPoint presentation, Event Name, City, Date of Presentation).

Short Note: Last Name, "Title of Presentation."

Example:

Full Note: Jane Doe, "Cocoa Delights: A Journey into Chocolate" (PowerPoint presentation, Chocolate Expo, New York City, March 10, 2023).

Short Note: Doe, "Cocoa Delights."

To cite a PowerPoint Presentation in Chicago style (Author-Date), use the format below:

Bibliography Entry: Last Name, First Name. "Title of Presentation." PowerPoint presentation, Event Name, City, Date of Presentation.

In-Text Citation: (Author Last Name, Date)

Example:

Bibliography Entry: Doe, Jane. "Cocoa Delights: A Journey into Chocolate." PowerPoint presentation, Chocolate Expo, New York City, March 10, 2023.

In-text Citation:
